The Washington Redskins changed their name in 2020, ending a nearly century-long run with a brand that, for many, represented Native American stereotypes. The move followed a surge in pressure from activists and sponsors who considered the name offensive and outdated. Amid the heightened social justice awareness surrounding George Floyd’s death, former team owner Dan Snyder, who had long resisted a change, was ultimately compelled to rebrand after major sponsors, including FedEx, threatened to pull support.
In response, the franchise first adopted the temporary name Washington Football Team before rebranding as the Washington Commanders in 2022. For some fans, however, the change marked the loss of a cherished identity.
After Donald Trump’s recent election victory, a wave of nostalgia resurfaced on social media, with calls for the president-elect to “bring back the Redskins.” Fans voiced frustration with the Commanders’ moniker, with one saying, “Commanders sounds too much like Communism,” and another commenting, “Every time I hear ‘Commanders,’ I think DEI, and it ruins the game.”
‘Redskins’ revival calls surge on social media
The Commanders’ rebranding was about more than a name; it involved removing Blackfeet Chief John Two Guns White Calf’s portrait from the team’s iconic logo. His family, who take pride in his image’s role on helmets and marketing for nearly 50 years, have voiced a desire for his likeness to return.
“The fans want him back, and we want him back,” said Thomas White Calf, a great-nephew of the chief. Delphine White Calf, another family member, shared her pride, adding, “Our ancestor was the most famous and most photographed Native in history.“
Yet, calls for a name reversal face significant hurdles. The team is now a private organization, currently led by new owner Josh Harris and NBA legend Magic Johnson, meaning Trump has no authority over the name change. One critic noted, “The Commanders are a private organization-Trump can’t make them do anything.”
The team’s current ownership hasn’t ruled out revisiting the name issue, though co-owner Marjorie Harris made it clear that the Commanders have their hands full right now. “Everybody has an opinion about the name,” Harris said, explaining that any decisions on rebranding will be tabled until the team finds its footing. So, for now, the Commanders name is here to stay-though that hasn’t silenced the fans hoping to see the Redskins return.
