Stephen Curry, known for his strong Christian faith, has rejected the nickname “devil” given to him by French commentators during the Paris Olympics, where he led Team USA to a dominant victory over France.
Despite finding the nickname amusing, Curry made it clear he cannot embrace it due to his deep belief in God.
Throughout his stellar career, Curry has earned several nicknames due to his exceptional offensive skills and long-range shooting.
Names like “The Chef,” “Baby-Faced Assassin,” and “Threezus” have followed him, but a new moniker emerged after his performance in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Curry played a pivotal role in securing gold for Team USA, particularly with standout performances against Serbia in the semifinals, where he scored 36 points, and in the final against France, where he contributed 24 points, hitting 8 out of 13 three-pointers.
Curry’s performance was so impressive that French commentators jokingly referred to him as a “devil” for crushing their dreams of Olympic gold.
Despite the lighthearted nature of the comment, Curry is not willing to adopt the nickname, given his strong religious beliefs.
“The French commentators were hilarious… ‘The devil Curry does it again,’ they said. However, I will not adopt that nickname,” Curry explained during an appearance on The Late Show.
While he acknowledged the humor in the situation, Curry firmly rejected the idea of being associated with such a title.

Curry has often spoken about the importance of his faith throughout his career. “I’m a humble servant of God and I wouldn’t know how to explain how important my faith is to who I am and how I play this sport,” Curry emphasized.
The Golden State Warriors star has always credited his success to his Christian beliefs, frequently pointing to the sky after victories to express gratitude: “I want people to know who I play for.”
Given this context, it’s clear why Curry was quick to dismiss the nickname, despite the amusement it brought.
His faith is integral to his identity as both a player and a person, and there’s no room for any label that conflicts with his beliefs.
