For decades, HDL cholesterol, known as “good cholesterol”, has been considered an ally in cardiovascular health. However, a new study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology suggests that this type of cholesterol may be linked to an increased risk of developing glaucoma in people over 55 years of age. Paradoxically, LDL cholesterol, commonly referred to as “bad cholesterol”, may be associated with a lower risk of this serious eye disease.
Surprising findings about cholesterol and glaucoma
The study analyzed data from more than 400,000 UK Biobank participants and found that those with higher levels of HDL cholesterol were 10% more likely to develop glaucoma compared to those with lower levels. In contrast, participants with elevated LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels showed a reduced risk of glaucoma
These results challenge conventional beliefs about how different types of cholesterol affect eye health and suggest that it is necessary to reconsider how lipid levels are managed in at-risk patients.
Implications for eye health
Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve and can lead to irreversible vision loss. It is estimated to affect approximately 112 million people by 2040. Risk factors include age, ethnicity and elevated intraocular pressure. This new finding raises important questions about how physicians should approach cholesterol treatment and management in older patients, especially those with a family history or predisposing factors for glaucoma.
The researchers caution that these findings are observational and do not establish a definitive cause-and-effect relationship. However, they suggest that further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms behind these associations and how they might influence current strategies for managing blood lipids.
