A few years ago, One Direction fans received what could probably be the worst news ever: there would no longer be five members in the music group, but four. Zayn Malik left in 2014, leaving Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson alone with the success they had generated together for so many years.
From there, he decided to go on a media hiatus, although he continued to release several songs that ended up being worldwide hits. His songs ‘Pillowtalk’ and ‘Like I Would’ are examples of his personal success.
However, he was silent for a long time. Moreover, many even thought that the details of his departure would never be known for sure. Although there are several rumors among fans, they have always remained, at least most of the time, skeptical when it comes to talking about their past.
Zayn Malik talks One Direction: I wanted to be the first to leave
The former One Direction star spoke in an hour-long interview on the podcast ‘Call Her Daddy’ with Alex Cooper.
There he revealed how he felt during his time away from the media. But, above all, about his comeback. Because although he did have a few years of success at the beginning, the truth is that he has not released any new songs for a long period of time. He will do so this July, when he will release a new single called ‘Love Like This’.
Anyway, and despite this return that will excite fans, eager to continue singing the songs of one of their favorite artists, One Direction is still linked to the name of Zayn Malik. So he also talked about his farewell and subsequent disappearance from the boyband.
“I took my time to not necessarily do interviews and too much press exposure because I feel like we were so overexposed in the band that it takes a little bit of time for a person to naturally progress as a human being and give something else that’s interesting about what you have to say,” Zayn said on the podcast.
Why is Zayn Malik coming back?
Many are surprised by the singer’s comeback. He claims he did it for his daughter, who is now six years old. “It used to give me a lot of anxiety to have conversations like this in this environment, and I wanted her to be able to look at me and say, ‘hey, my dad’s doing this.'”
Soon after, he referred to the competitiveness within the group. “I selfishly wanted to be the first person to go off and make my own record, being completely honest. I was like, ‘I’m going to go ahead for the first time.’ I’m a passive guy, but when it comes to my music and my business, I’m serious and competitive. So I wanted to be the first to go and do my own thing.”
